How to Saving Gas and Diesel Fuel
Saving Gas - Diesel and Money! Please email this to
your friend!
Getting more out of a tank of gas or diesel will have an
economic thrust for American drivers if prices at the pumps keep
going
up. Motorists can add 25 percent to the life of a tank of gas with a
few
simple adjustments to driving habits and auto maintenance.
Something’s
are simple, some take more effort and careful planning, some involve
maintenance
type items, some involve behavioral changes on your part and some
require
adding accessories to your vehicle. Below we present information on what fuel to
purchase. Maintenace aspects of fuel saving, where to purchase fuel,
driving habits to improve mileage, general information on save
fuel and accessories that you can use to improve milage.
Some tips are general knowledge and information, we hope you enjoy
this
information, share it with you friends and family and if you have any
suggestions that we have overlooked please drop us an email.
When ever possible take mass transit to work or school, drive the
Hummer
on the weekends. If two people are riding in a car, the gas used per
person
is immediately cut into half. If 4 people are sharing a ride, their
individual
gas bill becomes only one third. Since they can now use carpool
lanes,
they won't have to spend as much time in traffic.
You might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the
best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern
oil.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time
we fill-up the tank, we are sending our money to people who are trying
to kill us, our families, and our friends.

Maintenance
- Check tires inflation pressure on a regular basis at least monthly.
Under inflation can cut fuel economy by up to two percent per pound
of missing pressure. For every pound of pressure below recommended levels,
fuel economy drops 1 percent. You can lose up to 6% of fuel efficiency
for every pound per square inch (psi) below the manufacturer's minimum
recommendation. Have your tires properly balanced and keep the vehicle
"in alignment" to get the best gas mileage.
- Replace worn spark plugs. Worn spark plugs cause inefficient combustion,
wasted fuel 2.0 mpg. Worn O2 sensor Unable to detect and adjust air/fuel
mixture 3.0 mpg.
- Dirty or substandard engine oil increases internal engine friction
.4 mpg
- Loose gas cap or worn out caps allows fuel to evaporate. Keeping a
vehicle well maintained keeps it operating efficiently and reduces fuel
usage.
- Routinely replace dirty air filters that restrict airflow and also
increase your vehicle's fuel consumption. A new air filter alone can
improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.
- Periodically calculate the vehicle's fuel economy performance. A loss
of fuel economy could mean mechanical problems.

Keep your tank full, you can be sure that the next time you have to
purchase fuel it will be more expensive!

General Information
- Carrying a heavy load of unnecessary items in the trunk can increase
the fuel needed for daily trips. Clean out the Trunk. Remove unused
luggage, bicycle or ski racks and other extra weight you may have in
your car. Every 200 pounds of unnecessary weight reduces mileage by
one mile per gallon. (Yet another reason to go on that diet!)
- Plan less traveled more direct routs moving more quickly, reducing
the idle time. Set up your daily routes, to favor right hand turns where
possible, again to reduce running time. The less time you spend sitting
in left turn lanes, the less fuel you will burn. Getting lost or having
to backtrack wastes fuel and frays tempers.
- If your car is parked in the sun, roll the windows down and let the
hot air escape during the first few minutes of driving before you turn
on the air conditioner.
- The air conditioner compressor loads the motor, which reduces fuel
economy. Don't use the air conditioner unless you have to. Park your
car in the shade if you can, so you won't have to keep the AC on. Turn
off the AC 5 minutes before reaching destination. The air conditioner
verses fuel efficiency by as much as 12 percent in stop-and-go traffic.
Running you're A/C causes extra work for the engine, which lowers fuel
efficiency by 5-10%.
- Shift into neutral when you are standing still to reduce transmission
strain and cool off the transmission at long traffic light sequences,
railroad crossings.
- Turn off your engine if you are stopping for more than 30 seconds.
Restarting your car takes less gasoline than idling.
- Avoid heavy traffic and lots of traffic lights. The shortest route
is not always the most fuel efficient if you have to stop a lot.

Purchasing Gasoline or Diesel Fuel
- Don’t purchase gasoline or diesel fuel along the interstate
freeway, drive a short distance towards town center and find less expensive
fuel. Use the overdrive gears, as this will generally keep your RPM
down and your wallet happy.
- Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the
ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations
have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground
the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so
buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly
a gallon. In the
petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the
gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products
plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal
for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature
compensation at the pumps.
- When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to
a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages:low,
middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby
minimizing the vapors that are created while
you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are
pumping on the fast rate,! some other liquid that goes to your tank
becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground
storage tank so you're getting less worth
for your money.
- One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is
HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have
in your tank the less
air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can
imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This
roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so
it minimizes the evaporation.

Driving Habits
- Slowing down cruise at a steady pace of 70 MPH, driving slower can
slow down the drain on fuel. 5 mph results in an average fuel economy
loss of 6 percent. A car consumes most gas as it accelerates, quick
start and darting from lane to lane through traffic will deplete a tank
of gas much faster than a steady pace. As mileage decreases rapidly
at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 results in an additional
10 cents per gallon.
- On long trips maintain a constant speed use cruise control. A steady
pace uses less gas.
- Review your personal fleet and use the most fuel-efficient vehicle
for the majority of your driving. Consolidate small trips into one by
pre planning the route, pinpoint your shopping destinations, shopping
ahead online.
- When you are looking for deals on gas, remember that you can save
almost 20 cents a gallon by filling up at the self-serve rather than
the full service pump.
- Don't feed your car mid-grade or premium gas unless it is required
in your owner's manual or to prevent knocking in an older vehicle.
When caught in heavy traffic, don't let your engine idle for more than
a minute. Idling consumes half-a-gallon to one gallon of gas per hour
and wastes more fuel than restarting the engine. Follow the UPS trucks
example, waiting in line at McDonald’s shut the engine off.
- Ride the slipstream - Pay attention to the cars ahead of you (not
just the one right in front of your nose, but the other cars ahead of
that one), you can anticipate when things will slow down and you can
ease off the gas. This means you won't lose all that power to friction
(on the brakes) and you can keep your speed without having to accelerate.
In heavy traffic this is the most efficient way to save gas and can
easily get you 10% - 20% better gas mileage.

Accessories Upgrades Improve Horsepower and Fuel Mileage!
- Add cold air intake system to both gas and diesel engine can add 3
to 5 more miles per gallon. Chevrolet
Dodge Ford
- Buy a locking gas cap, with gasoline over $4.00 a gallon and Diesel
at $4.85 a gallon that 80 year old women living next door to you is
thinking about stealing your fuel while you are a sleep. She just cannot
remember if she is to blow into the hose or suck.
- Performance programmers tuning for your engine will improve performance. Replacement factory computer control for your engine computer that increases the power while at the
same time saving gas or diesel fuel. Ford Programmers. These programmers improve engine and fuel mixture
at both ends of the curve. Some new programmers allow you to easily
change the engine settings to suit your activities, one day setup for
optimal towing, the next day set for in town driving. Chevy
Dodge Programmers.
- If you have a long commute, tow a 5th wheel, trailer or have a motor
home you can install an auxiliary overdrive unit, these units will provide
22% overdrive, reduce engine RPM’s by between 500 to 600 and save
20% in fuel expense. Chevrolet
Dodge Ford
- Check that the rear differential ring and pinion ratio that you currently
have is correct for the vehicles current application and tire sizes.
For each ratio change difference you can affect the RPM’s by 300.
If you have lifted your vehicle and added larger tires this is important.
If you tow heavy loads you may need a gear change. Rear
End Ratio Change
- Replace the mechanical cooling fan that uses engine horsepower to
operate with an electrical driven fan reduces requirements on the engine.
