These quality M21 and M22's manual transmission parts, rebuild and overhaul
kits are designed to be top of the line overhaul kits. We have include information
on how to identify individual transmissions, application information, model
year, detailed kit and part availability by transmission type. Muncie transmissions
are covered in this section M21 and M22's, rear wheel drive (RWD), requiring
4 speed applications. The Muncie 4 speed manual transmission was use by General
Motors in Buick Special, Special Deluxe, GS, Lesabre, Wildcat, Electra, Century,
Centurion, Skylark and Regal. Chevrolet Belair, Biscane, Camaro, Chevelle, El
Camino, Impala, Malibu, Corvettes, Nova and Chevy II. GMC Caballero and Spirit.
Oldsmobile Cutlass, Jetstar, Cruiser 88, Delmont, Delta, Dynamic, F88, Omega,
Starfire, Vista and 442. Pontiac Catalina, Firebird, Trans AM, Grand Prix, LeMans,
Lemans GTO and Tempest.
Bearing overhaul kits are available depending on the extent of the overhaul that
you plan, the contents of the kits are described as follows:
IDENTIFICATION - Aluminum case, extension housing and
side cover. The side cover has 7 bolts and 2 shifter cams. The synchro rings
have 36 teeth and the unit has a 4-step cluster gear. Reverse gears are helical
cut and are located on the extension housing.

Muncie M21 / M22 4 Speed:
Overhaul kits by application include
standard kits, heavy duty kits for more horsepower and "WS" kits that
include both bearings and syncro rings as well as gaskets and seal for Buick,
Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile
and Pontiac. Plus we off a large selection of miscellaneous
hard parts.
IDENTIFICATION - Aluminum case, extension housing and side
cover. The side cover has 7 bolts and 2 shifter cams. The synchro rings have 36 teeth
and the unit has a 4-step cluster gear. Reverse gears are helical cut and are located
on the extension housing.
M-21 close ratio, and the extra heavy
duty close ratio" M-22, also known as the "Rock Crusher". The M-22 was generally installed behind
severely powerful (high torque) big-block engines. The M-22 is distinguished from an M-21 by
the angle of the gear teeth. The M-22 has "straight cut" gears. This make the transmission tend to
be noiser (whines or howls almost like a Crusher). The M-21 has a higher pitch angle on its gear teeth.
The close ratio gearboxs generally came with 3.73+ gear ratio'ed cars.
3.55 geared and higher (numerically lower) cars used the wide ratio gearbox. Identification and ratio information is provide below these
groves are typically cut across the clutch spline on the input shaft:
