Identifying Vehicles Equipped with OE Traction Adding Differentials

Ford cars and trucks from 1968 on have an axle code on the Certification Plate that can be used to determine if the vehicle is factory equipped with a limited slip differential. The Certification Plate can be located on the lock face of the left door edge. The plate layouts vary depending on the year, but in every case the axle code section is clearly marked as either "axle" or "ax". Ford axles codes contain one or two character. Any code beginning with a letter (an alpha code) indicates the vehicle is equipped with a limited slip differential EXCEPT as shown below. Some trucks with axle codes that are numbers only (numeric codes) are equipped with limited slip differentials. Please refer to the information below:

Cars, all alpha codes are limited slip except:


1968, all except L 1975-76, all except E, G 1982, all except B, F, Y
1969, all except B, C, D, E, F 1977, all except B 1983, all except A, B, F, J, Y
1970, all except B, C 1978, all except B, Y 1984-1990 all except F, Y
1971-72, all except B, G, H 1979-80- except B, F, G 1991-95 all except B, F, Y
1973-74, all except A, G 1981, all except A, B, F, G, Y  

Trucks, all as shown below are limited slip equipped:

1970-82, Rear, all alpha codes, no exceptions
1980-95, Front, all code 2
1983-85 Rear, all alpha except F9, G2, G3. Codes 22 &24 are also limited slip
1986 all alpha codes
1987-92, all alpha codes except R5, R6
1993 all alpha codes. Codes 18 & 19 are also limited slip equipped
1994 all alpha codes. Codes 17, 18, 24, 52, are also limited slip equipped
1995-96 all alpha codes. Codes 16, 17, 18, 24, 25 are also limited slip
1997 all alpha codes. Codes 17, 18, 24, 52 are also limited slip equipped

Front Axle Application Information:

The No-Slip works well on the front axle of 4-wheel drive vehicles provided a couple important guidelines are followed. The No-Slip should be used only on vehicles equipped with locking hubs on the front axle or with front axle disconnect. In addition, the vehicle must not be equipped with full time 4-wheel drive. Vehicles equipped with a No-Slip on the front axle should not be operated on the highway with the front hubs locked and 4-wheel drive engaged. Steering -- The affect on steering produced by a No-Slip may contributed to a degree of "under-steer" when turning under power. Sudden throttle changes during turns will accentuate "under-steer", especially on slippery or unstable surfaces. Following these guidelines will ensure very on-road derivability while still providing maximum off-road tractions. Be sure to maintain caution and drive carefully under control under all conditions.
