The NP203 transfer case was used by Dodge from 1974-1979, Ford from 1974 to 1979 and Chevrolet and GMC from 1973 to 1979. The NP203 transfer case is a chain driven transfer case with a cast iron case. The NP203 has a heavy duty case with a 2:00:1 low range with a set of differentials for full time use. The following link is a cross reference table to assist you in identification of your transfer case. Check the tag located on the rear of the unit for a model number and an assembly number. An illustrated drawing is provided below to assist you in parts identification, ordering and assembly. Should you elect to replace your NP203 transfer case unit with one of our high quality rebuilt re-manufactured transfer case, these units are provided with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty. All rebuilt transfer cases have new seals, bearings, chains, fork pads, encoder motors and viscous couplers. All shafts, sliders, hubs and planets are inspect to ensure proper factory tolerances are maintained. All units are tested at the factory prior to shipment. |
This chain drive transfer case's overall length of the NP203 case is 22"-23" from the face of the case to the rear output yoke's center. The shift positions of the NP203 are as follows from the most forward position (towards the engine) to the rear most position: Low Range Lock, Low Range, Neutral, High Range, High Range Lock. The NP203 has a high range of 1.00:1 and a low range of 2.01:1. The NP203 has fill hole for lubrication in the approximate middle of the rear face of the case. There isn't a drain plug in the NP203. Fluid is drained by removing the bottom bolts on the passenger side cover. The NP203 uses 10w-30 motor oil as for lubrication. The NP203 is designed with four sections. The differential housing, the output housing, the chain case, and the range box. Both forward two sections of the NP203 are made of cast iron, and the rear two sections are generally aluminum. The model tag is on the front of the chain case, above the output shaft. The NP203 assists in traction on almost every level, but can decrease gas mileage and wear on the front axles.
